Senza ragionarci troppo, giusto per riportare il Tweet che Alexis Petridis, giornalista del The Guardian stamattina alle 5,45 ha annunciato al mondo che Kevin Ayers è morto.
Mojo ha aggiunto che è accaduto il 18 febbraio a casa sua nel sud della Francia, probabilmente durante il sonno.
Il membro fondatore dei Soft Machine aveva 68 anni.

Bernard MacMahon, gestore della casa discografica di Ayers dice che è stato ritrovato morto stamattina (mercoledì 20 febbraio 2013) nel letto di casa sua a Montolieu, nel sud della Francia. Il comune del paesino ha confermato il decesso.
L’articolo aggiunge poi una nota di colore dichiarata da un abitante del posto (una di quelle cose che da noi inventano in redazione, non so in Francia…): “Era un tipo molto simpatico; a volte lo trovavi a suonare la chitarra nel bar del paese. Una volta aveva lasciato una sua chitarra nel bar con un biglietto: Chi vuole suonare suoni!”

Chi era Kevin Ayers????????
Tanto per capirci:
- è stato membro fondatore dei Soft Machine assieme a Daevid Allen, Robert Wyatt e Mike Ratledge (tra questi purtroppo è il primo ad essere trapassato) ed è stato l’autore di molti dei brani più famosi del gruppo.
- ha suonato con loro durante il tour del 1968 assieme alla Jimi Hendrix Experience
- E’ stato l’unico ad aver avuto Syd Barrett ospite nel proprio gruppo all’infuori dei gruppi di Barrett stesso (Pink Floyd e Stars)
- Ha suonato in diverse occasioni con Nico dei Velvet Underground sia in questo live che nell’album The Confessions of Dr. Dream and Other Stories
- Ha scoperto e lanciato Mike Oldfield (quello di Tubular Bells) che a soli 17 anni fu scelto per suonare basso e chitarra nel suo capolavoro “Shooting at the Moon”
- Per un breve periodo nel 1971 ha fatto stabilmente parte dei GONG, una registrazione di quel periodo si trova nell’album Pre-Modernist Wireless. Qui sotto una rara foto dei Gong di quel periodo ad Hérouville in Francia (Kevin Ayers è il secondo da sinistra)
- Ha scritto più di una volta su IT, il giornale underground per eccellenza della Swinging London

Ayers non è stato l’unico ad aver suonato con Syd Barrett all’infuori dei membri dei Pink Floyd e degli Stars: per esempio in alcuni brani di “The Madcap Laughs” suonano tutti e tre i Soft Machine dell’epoca (Wyatt, Ratledge e Hopper) e in altri brani di quello stesso disco e di “Barrett” suonano (anche) vari altri musicisti che non facevano parte né degli Stars né dei Pink Floyd.
Ho modificato il punto per cercare di essere più chiaro.

“The house was called Chateau du Hay, which gave it a rather grander tone than in fact it had, being full of mouldering boars head’s on the walls, to the abiding horror of the vegatarian household. Kevin Ayers came here and rehearsed, but never actually joined the band, being more of a solitary person. But there was a nostalgia for the Soft Machine and appreciation of Kevin’s classic songs. Rehearsals led to a series of gigs in France and England, ending with the Roundhouse and the BBC. Gigs with Kevin tended to extremes of high electricity producing some surprising results such as being teargassed by the police at the Palais des Sports, people falling off stage or people leaping on stage to join in. With Gong in 1971 absurdity and the unpredictable ruled. The three tracks from 1971 are Magick Brother, Clarence in Wonderland and Tropical Fish/Selene. I wonder whether there are any more kicking around?
